As I work to bring the events of my physician career into a narrative arc, I see that the antagonist was always one of the monoliths mentioned here: Patriarchy, Capitalism. And their internalization that didn't allow me to ask for what I needed. Thanks for articulating the "grind culture" so well. And for suggesting books that work against it.

I feel like a lot of women in my circle want to slow down. I don’t know if it’s actually possible, but I hope we can figure it out.

There is something in the spiritual universe these days--I, too, have few ambitions for this summer, telling my spiritual director I want to focus on people and relationships rather than what they will become. And I want to let myself just write what I want to write...which so far, is precious little! And just the other day a friend and I were talking about how we don't want to know how fast we're running because that might take the joy out of it, the feeling that we were flying high even though the time wasn't all that impressive. So thanks for this. Definitely resonates!

Heather, I love this so much! Lots of sports happening in our household these years, so I appreciated your track stories, and Mr. Burton's compassionate counter-balance to the "body as winning commodity" athletic perspective. I also deeply resonate with the desire for to participate in that "Larger Than Me" co-creation. Thanks!

Loved this, especially the examination of how these messages reach us as children and implant within us.

Wow, kudos to Mr. Burton!! And to you for sharing this! I’m 39 and it did me immense good to hear hear him say that my energy will ebb and flow with my body rhythms. His influence still resonates decades later!
